We live in a world where an hour without internet feels like an eternity! Whether it’s for work, social media, googling ‘Trade Brains’, WhatsApp calls, or even while reading this article, having an internet connection is a must.

Now, imagine a life without access to 30% of the internet—pretty hard to picture, right? But there’s an Indian company that will never let that happen! So, who is that company?

It’s none other than Tata Group. Its subsidiary, Tata Communications, controls about 30% of the world’s internet routes. Not only does it connect businesses to 80% of the world’s cloud giants, but it also connects 4 out of 5 mobile subscribers globally. Pretty amazing, right?

Tata Communications, previously known as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), represents over 300 companies from the Fortune 500.

Undersea cables handle 99% of international internet traffic worldwide, and without them, there would be no email, social media, Netflix, Spotify, online shopping, search engines, or cloud computing—everything we rely on in the modern internet.

And Tata Communications operates the world’s largest wholly owned and most advanced subsea fibre network, carrying over 30% of the global internet routes, and has a data centre network located in 44 locations worldwide.

They offer services like ethernet, cloud services, private line services and manage other support services such as security, satellite teleports, fibre-based video networks, transcoding, and more.

Their network includes over 500,000 km of subsea fibre, and 210,000+ km of terrestrial fibre, and controls over 130,000 miles of fibre cables, 2,40,000+ km of round-the-globe fibre optic ring, and 500+ PoPs.

They cover 240+ countries and territories with nearly 1 million square feet of data centre and collocation space worldwide.

And while that much fibre is enough to wrap around the globe 15 times, they used it to connect 6 continents.

Annually, they carry 53 billion minutes of international voice traffic – that’s 1 in 10 voice calls globally—which also means that over 1 lakh of you are currently using their voice network for international calls.

Today, they own and operate the world’s largest subsea cable network, reaching countries representing 99.7% of the world’s GDP.

So, with that additional 30% internet, doesn’t life become much more efficient and complete?

Tata Communications is listed on both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India, and its revenue in 2022-23 stood around ₹17,838 crores.
